Bolex Memories (Circa 1933) |
Opening...
A moist brain prodded by steel awls. The footage is old black and white stock -- critically degraded, saturated with audio crackle over the hiss of shortwave radio oscillations. Then silence, as we watch confused eyes rendered through grainy nitrate. The brow twitches, prompting an iris to dart spasmodically, as if subjected to mild electric current. Return to the brain and its crackling static, as the awls probe even deeper. "Could be that lobe, could be that one..." They are frenzied knitting needles, searching for an idea, perhaps... An obscure notion misplaced within the glistening folds. A low-frequency hum threatens to overtake the static, but it is only a distraction (uninformed emotional upheaval, looming somewhere beneath the subconscious). Then silence again, as the eyes convey increased agitation. They are nearly empty. A final glimpse of the brain with its tormented rumble, then to a figure shuffling down a grimy corridor. He is wrapped in a white robe, and the top half of his skull is bandaged. Turban of the lobotomized -- de facto accouterment of the forgetful, and the eternally forgotten. He staggers out of focus, then stumbles into a gurney heaped with discarded tissue, failing to jar anything of consequence. Cut to a stainless steel tray, piled with awls and other contaminated implements. These were intended to reveal something important, but both vials remain empty. Perhaps in the proper hands... Things might have been different. A clear fluid spatters the tray, then suddenly erupts into a blinding fireball. This generates a loud whooshing sound... "Oh, the humanity!" Back to the eyes (left pupil rapidly dilating) as we hear glass apparatus crashing to the floor and the moan of a woman, remembering.
